Reflection of ES2007(final post)

Time passed by so fast, it is week 13 now. I have learnt a lot from this module. Not only enhanced my communication and writing skills, I also made a lot of friends in class.

First of all, my communication skills had enhanced throughout these 13 weeks. As a Science student, I seldom got the chance to present in front of public. Even during a tutorial presentation, we only need to write down our tutorial answers on the whiteboard. On the contrary, in this project base module, I got chances to do presentations twice. Although my presentation skill is lousy, I do see myself improving through the entire course. We also need to talk a lot for class participation. Although my performance was not quite active in class, I still got a lot of chances to speak. During our project meeting, we again practiced our communication skills in terms of negotiation about project.

Moreover, I got more chances to practice my writing skills as well. We have to write blogs each week and comment on each other. This is a very good way to improve our writing skills, as others can always see mistakes and areas to improve that we cannot recognize by ourselves.

In addition, I got the chance to taste how it is to write a resume. Although it seems quite late for a year 4 student like me, I think year 2 and year 3 students did benefit a lot from that, at least they got the chance to try before they write a real one. And I have to say that I should take this module in my year two!

In conclusion, I gained a lot from this module. My communication skills have improved in terms of verbal and nonverbal. I have enhanced my writing skills trough writing blogs and proposals. All these experiences will help me when I go for future interviews with my potential employers.

  1. Hi Danhua,

In your second paragraph, you said that your presentation skill is lousy. I beg to differ! If you feel like you're new to this, trust me, you're doing VERY WELL. If i were to rate your presentation out of 10, i would give it a 7.5! You were very well prepared, professional and also clear in your delivery. That's what makes a good presentation. One more thing, it's not too late to learn to write a good resume! I personally don't think it matters if you're taking this module in year 2, 3 or 4. What's important is that you've TAKEN this module and you've learnt alot from this. It's so much better than not taking it at all! I'm sure your resume and personal statement will stand out from your peers who lack this skill!

Nonetheless, there's just so many things we realized we're missing. Thus, there is a need for us to apply the 7Cs when we convey a written message and also remember the essence of effective communication (Source --> Encoding --> Proper channel --> Decoding --> Receiving --> Feedback to source). All these are indeed very important wherever we go, be it with our future employer or our close friends.

Lastly, it's been great knowing you. We may not be in the same group for peer teaching or oral presentation, but i've definitely learnt alot from you in class through our mini class discussion and also critics on blogs/proposal/oral presentation. Every single student in the class really matters! I have to thank you for that!

Till then, all the best and good luck for your upcoming exams! :D

    Cheers,
    Ariff

  2. Hi Danhua,

If you compare this last post to your very first few posts, your writing skills have definitely improved. Perhaps you can continue practicing writing to sharpen your skills further.

I agree with Ariff that your presentation skills are not "lousy". It is quite good compared to most people I have seen. Moreover, now that you have taken this course, you should be more confident in yourself. You now roughly know, what to do and what not to do during a presentation. This will definitely benefit you in the future.

Overall, a well written post. It has been great knowing you as well, wish you luck for your upcoming exams. :)

    Regards,
    Pak Ming

  5. Dear Danhua,

It is very nice to know that you've gained a lot of experience in this module. Ms. Happy will definitely glad about that, too.

Well, life is about learning and i can "feel" that you think so, too (based on this entry and your comments). Great! I shall learn that "spirit" from you and thank you so much for all your comments in my entries!

Last but not least, best wish and take care!

    Cheer,
    Ryan

  6. Heyas Danhua,

Hey now, don't be so rough on yourself! Watching both the presentation and the video afterward, I have to say that I am very impressed. Considering that English is not your first tongue, you have done excellently. I could only hope that I master a second (or third) language as well as you have.

Working with you has been a charm. You were always the first to arrive and you always took initiative. Thank you, Danhua. It was also nice learning a bit about your hometown. I hope you get to go back soon, at least for Chinese New Year. Also, I apologize for being so sluggish at times, haha.

I wish you the best of luck, especially with your FYP.

    Take care,
    Louie

  7. Dear DanHua,

Firstly I must say your presentation skills are surely not ‘lousy’. I actually think you presented very well. You had a great posture and you were clam and collected through out the presentation which is not easy. Like Louie has mentioned, since English isn’t your first language it is understandable that your pronunciation may not be very accurate but please do not say that your presentation was ‘lousy’ just because of this reason. If I were to give a presentation in Tamil, that would be the end of me…hahaha.

I am glad that you managed to benefit from this module and I hope you would take back what we have learnt in this module and improve further :) Like you have mentioned that your skills have improved in just 3 months, I believe that you will be a great speaker with more experience.

It has been very nice knowing you, and thank you for your comments on my Blog. Good luck for your future and do keep in touch :)

    Cheerios,
    Keerth ^^
