Reflection on OP

Our presentation ended this Thursday. Before I start evaluating my own performance, I would first like to thank my group-mates Luigi and Zhengyang for giving me such great help during the entire process of OP preparation. Without their help, I would not have made it.
I evaluate my performance as follow:

Preparation:
Our interview was held on Wednesday afternoon, we have to work out the slides and prepare for OP right after that. In order to be well prepared for the OP the next day, we practiced till 5 am in the morning. We recorded our rehearsal to control time and see where we can improve. I put in a lot of effort to prepare and as result of all the practice we had, I became quite familiar with the contents.

During the OP:
I am able to deliver my points clearly, maintain eye contact with my audience and audibly. However, there are a few areas which I can improve on.

I was a bit nervous when I was presenting and I could hear my voice shaking. Moreover, due to the nervousness, I forgot one of the points which I prepared. I felt that I fared better for our rehearsals, but I was too nervous for the real presentation. This showed that I will need more experiences to enhance my presentation skills. There is an area which I have to improve on.

In addition, Ms Goh mentioned that we shouldn’t speak while we walk across the slides to pass on to the next person. I have to admit that I was the one who did that. It was a silly mistake I made. The reason I did that may be I was not aware that it would be very odd to do that. I will not commit this mistake again.

In conclusion, I felt that I performed better for this OP than my peer teaching. Although there are areas where I can do better, I was more familiar with my contents, was able to deliver my points more clearly, and looked at the audience from time to time. This presentation has been a valuable experience for me.

  1. Dear Dan Hua,

I think you improved quite a fair bit since the peer teaching presentation. And I totally agree, presentation is more about experience than rehearsals. My brother is in NTU Toastmasters, his President was able to come up with a 30min speech on the stage, in front of a huge audience and spoke fluently and in relevance to the topic.

For your OP, I think you did well on the speed of presentation. The shaky voice is not really a problem, not everyone can speak smoothly and clearly when they are raising their voices.
And from the confidence you showed, we all knew you were familiar with the contents.

However, there are some points to improve on. Perhaps you can try speaking louder when you want to emphasize on a point. I also think you stood too still during the presentation, perhaps you can work on your postures and gestures to bring across important points more effectively.

Overall, I think your team did a very good presentation. Lastly, it did seem awkward when you walked and talked (tee hee).

    Pak Ming

  2. Hi Danhua,

Kudos to you and your team for that great presentation last Thursday! Your team began and ended off the presentation on a positive note which i thought was a great move considering the formality of presentation settings. And i sense a strong teamwork especially during the Q&A session where all three of you supported each other.

As for your individual presentation, i felt that your body composure needed a little more variety. I think if you were less stiff and more relaxed, it would make you look more confident and calm. I can see that you were very well-versed with the content of the presentation, which was good! And your delivery has improved significantly as compared to the peer teaching presentation. Overall, it was a job well done! :D

    Cheers,
    Ariff

  3. Hi Danhua,

I do think you have improved a lot since peer teaching. You were not that nervous or at least did not appear to be nervous. I totally did not realize that your voice was shaking, so don't worry about it too much. :) You were able to present your ideas clearly and concisely, and you sounded more like presenting instead of reciting the script. Good job!

However, I think maybe you should be more enthusiastic, which could make your presentation more powerful. :)

  4. Hi Pak Ming,
    Thanks for your Comments.
You raise a good suggestion for me.
Maybe I could walk around to make it more comfortable.
But I have to say, I didn't notice I stand too still untill you point it out.
    Thank you

  6. Hi Xiaoyu,
    Thank you for your comments.
Your comments made me feel my performance is wonderful. However, i know there are still a great space for me to improve. Like sounds more enthusiastic, I thought I am enthusiastic enough. But you let me know that I still need to improve on that.

    Regards,
    Danhua

  8. Dear Danhua,

After hearing your group’s presentation, it was proposal that would impress the professors present. The portion that you presented was clear and succinct; you were professional looking as well.

However there are some minor issues which I think you could consider during your presentation. Firstly, there was a portion of quoting some professors that you did at the beginning your slides. Maybe you could explain why generally most of them were statistics professors or purely coincidental. Next during one portion when you were a bit nervous, maybe you could consider slowing down to reorganize your thoughts so that your audiences could better understand your point instead of being lead on somewhere else. Other than the physical posture mentioned above by others, I think that such “unknowing” actions are common for all of us since we do not present often in Science. Therefore like you mentioned, with more practice and more self-awareness, you could overcome that easily. On a side note, you have a clear and nice voice which could aid your oral presentation skills too.

The other point could be the issue of speaking out slightly more during Q&A so that you would not appear to be drowned out by the other two speakers. (No offence to Luigi or Zhengyang.)Reticence might make you a less convincing speaker.

Finally, your group presentation was executed nicely. You came off a focused and amiable speaker. Therefore I hope that the above minor suggestions could help you further in your presentation skills.

  9. Hi Danhua,

I think your group has exhibited good rapport especially during the Q&A session. This is evident from the way you and your teammates try to back up for each other. From there, you guys have shown that all of you are very familiar with your project scope and equally capable of answering the questions posed.

I believe that you were a little nervous at some point in time because you were lost for words. Given that a formal presentation like this is a rare experience for Science students like us, I think it is understandable for one to be nervous.

    Cheers,
    Xin Wei

  11. Dear Danhua,

Your group had done a great job for the presentation! I could see that all of you were clearly familiar with the content and the excellent rapport between you and your team mates during the Q & A session was evident.

As for your individual performance, your content presented was definitely clearly related to the presentation’s objective and your voice volume and speed was appropriate. I could also see that you tried to engage the audience with your constant eye contact. However, just as you had mentioned, you were slightly nervous and this could be inferred from the constant slight movements you made during the presentation. Perhaps you could consider working on your gestures. During the Q & A session, you showed signs of panic when answering while answering one of the questions. It would be even better if you could be more confident. Nonetheless, you had shown great improvement as compared to your peer teaching. Keep up the good work!

    Regards,
    Huiyi

  12. Dear Dan hua,

If I may, a pat on your back!

Firstly, yes, even if so many have said it before me, you did a terrific job at the oral presentation. Not only did you overcome your nervousness, you also pronounce very clearly. I would think that this is the result of relentless practice.

We worked togather for the peer-teaching, and i find that you are one who is very particular about details. This is very good and is clearly reflected when you painstakingly explain your points much to the benefit of the audience who understands u better.

And gosh, you looked great on the day itself. I even commentted to Gail that you can be a model instead. As with all presentations, attire contributes much to first impression and precedes even the message. You certainly scored a star for dressing.

I want to applaud you for the effort. It is plain to see that you already know where you might have gone wrong because you slowed down and confidently bring your message across at certain portions of your delivery.

And yes, considering the time constrain and last minute changes, your group did a wonderful job of getting everything togather. I voted your group as number 2!!(which you already know)

If ever, thank you for being such a nice character in class and a projectmate who is so willing to feed me! (remember waffles??)
